Painting the Isthmus with art friends

It's fun to have company on landscape painting expeditions and we really had a blast loading up cars with an abundance of paint, finding the right location on Indian Island and merrily painting by the side of the road. We were a peaceful group, but sadly, not all of the art loving insects survived. Otherwise there were no catastrophes.

My in progress painting of wetlands

More in progress paintings with Lauretta's acrylic on left and my oil with sailboat on the right

Here I am flanked by Lauretta  Frost on the left ( my right) who is visiting  to her " real home" and Sharon Schlentner on the right. (Note the hats)

Turning Point Opening at Corridor Gallery in Seattle!

This was such a great time to get together with fellow Edge graduate friends from  all over the state.
Here are some shots of the opening, gallery and artwork.

Me, Andrea in front of my painting, Rite of Spring: Firelight Dance.
It was a bit dark on that wall but I heard they are putting a new light bulb in so hopefully it is now glowing with firelight!

Spring is Coming

Spring is coming! I finally got a chance to start work on my Geese paintings inspired by a drive through Whidbey and La Conner from a previous springtime. It is truly amazing to be surrounded by their honking whiteness.  Here is my small painting of Geese:

Frozen Plein Air on Marrowstone Island

Now that I have recovered from my broken ankle and am more mobile, I was determined to do some early morning landscape painting. My adventurous friend Beverly Michaelson joined me early one morning in February in what turned out to be 28 degree weather. We appeared by the side of the road looking like rotund elves topped with paint spattered smocks. Painting as fast as we could between sips of quickly cooling hot tea, we managed to capture some of the early morning light over Marrowstone Island's waterways. Here are some of our results. My smaller study and Beverly's landscape.

Symphony Parnassus Collaborates with Artists!

Symphony Parnassus has chosen my painting: Rite of Spring: Pond Dance for the cover of their March program. They will perform The Rite of Spring composed by Stravinsky. This is so fun since the Rite of Spring inspired my painting and I listened to the symphony while painting it. Now my painting will be looked at by concert goers.!

Transforming Gesture Artist Talk

Here are some stills taken by Christopher Overman, photographer extraordinaire from the dance performance installation piece inspired by the Transforming Gesture exhibit last Sunday, October 10, 2010.
Maureen Freehill and Nala Walla created a spontaneous dance about fertility and nature in the Northwind Arts center gallery.
The pictures show Andrea Lawson and Karen Kosoglad's paintings. Andrea's paintings were inspired by dance and specifically the ballet Rite of Spring. The program created another level of interaction between art dance, dance life, fertility, nature and expression. The exhibit will remain on view through November 1, 2010 in Port Townsend, Washington.

Transforming Gesture Exhibit

Transforming Gesture

Paint and metal become form.
Transforming the gesture into evocative works of art, three artists express their reactions to motion, form and time in paintings, and jewelry explosive with color, passion and intellect.
Truthfully present in the moment, each artist explores her unique vision with a common thread.

The Artists:

Amy Reeves, " The passage of time has become a recurring theme in my jewelry."

Andrea Lawson, "In my Rite of Spring paintings, I explore movement and rhythm of gestural dance figures as they appear and disappear creating a metaphor for our relationship with a pulsating natural world."

Karen Kosoglad, " I'm interested in the gestural moments in everyday life and the balance between weight, rhythm, shape and color."

Transforming Gesture will be on view October 1 through November 1, 2010
